Ancient Thermal Baths of Therma
The archaeological site of Kambos occupies the area of the island’s ancient capital, Oinoe, which was inhabited from the Mycenaean era to the early Byzantine period. The city experienced great economic prosperity thanks to the famous “Pramnian wine” produced in the area. Today, sections of the wall that enclosed the city survive, as do the remains of a Byzantine dwelling. Within the archaeological site, visitors can see ruins of the Roman Odeon (1st century AD), with impressive masonry and large arches; the Byzantine secular building known as the “Palatia”; the Late Roman aqueduct; and the Byzantine Church of St. Irene with its characteristic slate roof. The archaeological site has recently been expanded and mapped, and within it operates the Archaeological Museum of Kambos, where important finds from Oinoe and the wider area are displayed.
