Archaeological Site of Archontiki

At the site of “Archontiki,” on Psara’s southwestern coasts, lies the archaeological site of Archontikio. It is an organized settlement and necropolis of the Late Bronze Age (1300 – 1190 BC). The archaeological remnants cover the plain and Karagiannis hill, revealing an advanced society with houses built in clusters, elongated in the megaron type, with rectangular rooms, earthen or pebble floors, stone thresholds and stairways. Streets paved with dirt and stones connected the neighborhoods, while a central axis led to the harbor. The necropolis consists mainly of cist graves of the Mycenaean period (1450–1100 BC), cut into soft rock with stone lining. In total, 162 graves were investigated, including a tholos tomb attributed to an honored hero. Today, casts of the grave goods have been placed in the tombs, while a scale model of the settlement is presented at the guardhouse.
