Archaeological Site of the Acropolis of Agios Georgios
The archaeological site on the hill of Agios Georgios in Chrysopigi, Fourni, covers about 36 stremmata and is identified as the ancient acropolis of the Korseitai, as inscriptions carved on a marble rock attest. Sections of walls, drainage infrastructure, steps hewn into the rock, and a statue base with an inscription survive, proving the site’s strategic and defensive importance from Hellenistic to Roman times. The fortified position had direct visual contact with other Aegean defense points, such as the Drakanos tower on Ikaria and Kastraki on Agathonisi, forming part of a broader network of watchpoints and beacons. The archaeological site is currently being developed by the Ministry of Culture, with interventions aimed at conserving the ancient remains, creating walking routes, and installing interpretive material, to make it safer and more accessible to visitors.
