Ikaria

Archaeological Museum of Kampos

The Palaeokastro at Miliopo, Ikaria, crowns a rocky height of Mount Gerakas, at an elevation of about 300 m, offering strategic oversight of the island’s north coast. It is a medieval stronghold of uncertain dating, probably of the Frankish period, with surviving sections of wall, gates, battlements and cisterns. Inside, the foundations of more than thirty buildings survive, as does the Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos. Of particular interest is the early Christian basilica of Taxiarchis (late 4th–early 5th c. AD), one of the island’s oldest Christian monuments, with preserved sections of the sanctuary, capitals and columns. Just before the castle entrance stands the very old church of St. Kyrikos and St. Ioulitta. The archaeological site, combining the castle and the religious monuments, reflects Ikaria’s long history and continuous human presence in the area.
