Alepoudellis Mansion

The Alepoudellis Mansion in Sourada, Mytilene, was built between 1910 and 1912 by Thrasyvoulos Alepoudellis, uncle of poet Odysseas Elytis, as a summer residence on a four-stremma seaside property. Thrasyvoulos and his brother Panagiotis were active in olive oil and soapmaking. The building was designed in Constantinople by architect Iliadis and executed by master Asimakis Fouskas. It is an imposing building with neoclassical elements, such as marble staircases and capitals, and wood-carved decorations on the roofs. The basement housed storage and the kitchen; the ground floor, reception rooms; the first floor, bedrooms; and the attic, servants’ quarters. The mansion hosted prominent figures of politics and the arts and was the setting for Elytis’ childhood and youth summers.
