Archaeological Site of Thermi
A prehistoric settlement of the Early Bronze Age (3200–2400 BC) with five building phases, as well as settlement remains of the Middle and Late Bronze Age (2000–1300 BC). It lies about 10 km north of the city of Mytilene. Thermi I was a small, unfortified town with urban planning. The houses shared party walls and formed complexes organized radially around a central complex, which was delimited by a corridor. In Thermi II the first attempt at defensive reinforcement was made: the continuous exterior walls of the houses created a kind of fortification circuit. In Thermi III a circuit wall and bastions were constructed. In Thermi IV the pericentral system was abandoned and the town was rebuilt with a different orientation. In Thermi V a strong defensive wall was built and the “rectangular” or linear town plan was perfected with a central main street and smaller cross streets. Around 2400 BC the settlement was abandoned and was reoccupied after 2000 BC.
