Gera

Gera lies in southern Lesvos, about 25 km from Mytilene, and takes its name from the gulf of the same name. It includes the villages Mesagros, Skopelos, Palaiokipos, Papados, Plakados and Perama, which stand out for their mansions, farmhouses and traditional buildings. In Papados rises the Vranas mansion, the maternal home of Odysseas Elytis. In Mesagros, the minaret of the old mosque survives with a crescent and cross, while in Skopelos the “Magdalene’s Tunnels” and the plane tree-shaded square stand out. Palaiokipos hosts the church of Saint Hermolaos, and Perama—the port and former commercial center of Gera—has the historic “Surlagas” tannery.
