General Archives of State (GSA)-Local Archival Collection of Ikaria

The Archaeological Museum of Agios Kirykos is housed in a listed neoclassical building of 1925, which originally served as the town’s Old Gymnasium. The two‑storey building, erected with donations from Ikarians in America, stands out for its pediments, plasterwork, marble central staircase and large courtyard. On the first floor are the exhibition rooms with the archaeological collection, presenting finds that tell the history of Ikaria and its inhabitants from the Neolithic period (6800–3800 BC) to Roman times. The exhibits include vases, amphorae, tools, coins and utensils from excavations on Ikaria and from shipwrecks in the wider sea area. The ground floor houses the administrative services, the conservation laboratory and modern support facilities.
