Byzantine Museum of Chios (Metzitie Mosque)

Image

The Byzantine Museum of Chios is housed in the Ottoman Mecidiye Mosque (Metzitie), built with the sponsorship of Sultan Abdülmecid in the mid-19th century on Chios town square. Its restoration was carried out under the Third Community Support Framework with funding from the North Aegean Regional Operational Program. The exhibition does not alter the monument’s interior character; on the contrary, it highlights it, making the building itself an exhibit. The mosque and exhibition coexist harmoniously and complement each other. The exhibition aims to present the historical and cultural trajectory of Chios from the Early Christian period to modern times and to highlight the interaction of the various cultural groups that coexisted on the island over time. It comprises four thematic units, each accompanied by texts and visual material of general and specialized content.
