Ranti forest

In central Ikaria, on the west side of the Atheras mountain range, lies the Ranti Forest, also known as “Gaia.” It is one of Europe’s oldest forests and one of the last oak forests of the Aegean, covering about 16 km². The forest is part of the Natura 2000 network and has been designated a “Preserved Monument of Nature,” thanks to its special ecological and botanical value. The dominant species is the kermes oak, with trees over 300 years old; strawberry trees, heathers, and various other shrubs are also found. The fauna includes small mammals such as the protected stone marten, hedgehogs, and various rodent species. It is a unique habitat of incomparable natural beauty, combining ecological importance with historical and aesthetic value and serving as a living monument of nature.
