Eresos

Eresos, one of Lesvos’ best-known settlements, lies at the island’s southwestern end, 89 km from Mytilene, between the heights of Troulos and Lempor. Its name is linked either to the mythical Eresos, son of King Macar, or to the ancient verb “eresso,” meaning “to row.” Two great figures of antiquity were born in Eresos: the poet Sappho and the philosopher Theophrastus. The area stands out for its volcanic landscape, traditional settlement and monuments. Among them, the Pithari Monastery holds a significant place, built in a verdant basin surrounded by volcanic formations. The Archaeological Museum exhibits finds illuminating the area’s history, while the Agricultural Cooperative produces the famed Eresos PDO kasseri cheese. Skala Eresou, with its sandy Blue Flag beach, attracts thousands of visitors every summer.
