Ecclesiastical Museum of the Holy Metropolis of Lemnos

In Romaikos Gialos of Myrina, on the ground floor of the Metropolitan Mansion and next to the Archaeological Museum, lies the Ecclesiastical Museum of Lemnos. Its creation is owed to Metropolitan Ierotheos, who began the effort in 1989 and realized it in 1991. The museum gathers and preserves icons, sacred vessels, books, documents, and vestments from churches of Lemnos and Agios Efstratios, offering a vivid picture of the island’s Byzantine and post-Byzantine tradition. The two halls house 502 objects, among them 197 icons—the oldest the Lamentation over the Dead Christ of 1777—and 85 rare books, such as the Menaion for March of 1558. The collection also includes 37 vestments, 154 ecclesiastical vessels, and 29 other items, such as chandeliers and pastoral staffs. The museum serves as an important guardian of Lemnos’ ecclesiastical heritage.
