Church of Saint John the Theologian

The Chapel of Saint John the Theologian lies inland, in the central part of Fourni, and is one of the island’s oldest religious monuments. It was built in 1909 with donations from residents and retains the features of traditional island architecture. Outside, the old bell and the courtyard with pines and benches for rest stand out. Inside, the iconostasis bears icons from 1910 that come from the Skete of Saint Mark on Chios. In the yard is a cistern completed in 1954, with the original pit shaped as early as 1930; according to accounts, the site contained ruins of an older church built of hewn stones. A small hut that in recent years served as a wine press also survives. The area is known as “Choristaria,” as the Chora of Fourni once stood there, and the chapel is celebrated with festivals on 8 May and 26 September.
