Church of Saint George – Elevation of the Holy Cross
The parish church of the settlement of Thymaina, dedicated to Saint George and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, is a two-aisled church where two sanctuaries share the same space. First, the church of Saint George was built and later, for unknown reasons, the church of the Exaltation of the Cross was added. The wooden iconostasis of Saint George, dated 1894, bears relief floral motifs, and the Holy Table rests on a cylindrical base. In the church of the Exaltation of the Cross, the iconostasis is built of masonry, with old icons of the Dodekaorton and works from the Holy Skete of Saint Mark dated 1911 placed in special niches. The sanctuaries’ altars communicate with each other, while in the nave a large icon of the High Priest (1971) dominates; on the dome is raised decoration with flowers, daisies, and stars, motifs repeated on the iconostasis. With its traditional Cycladic character, the church is a center of religious and spiritual life for Thymaina’s residents.
