Heroes’ Monument of the Fallen Fighters of the 1821 Revolution, Psara
The Heroes’ Monument to the fallen fighters of the Revolution of 1821 stands in the Holocaust Heroes’ Square, near the harbor, a venue for annual memorial ceremonies during the commemorations of the Holocaust of Psara. Its stele lists the names of the fallen Psarians and features verses from Dionysios Solomos’ epigram “The Destruction of Psara” (1825): “On Psara’s black, blackened ridge – Glory, walking on her own – ponders the valiant lads – and on her head she wears a wreath – woven from a few blades of grass – left on the desolate land.” The monument stands as a symbol of memory and heroism, honoring those who defended Psara to the point of self-sacrifice during the 1824 destruction.
