Oinousses
Holy Monastery of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary
The Holy Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Oinousses is an excellent example of Byzantine-style architecture, located three kilometers northwest of the Chora. It was built in 1962 by the shipowning family of Panagos and Katigko Pateras, as a family vow to the Virgin Mary. The religious frescoes that adorn the monastery’s interior were painted by the famed iconographer Fotis Kontoglou and are unique in their kind. The Monastery of the Annunciation honors its protectress on 28 August (old calendar), the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Finally, a short distance from the monastery stands the Cross of Oinousses, 12 meters high on a hill with a breathtaking view.
