Monastery of the Annunciation, Mavrianos

The Holy Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos at Mavrianou is on Ikaria’s west side, south of Nanoura, between the villages of Vrakades and Amalo. Built in the late 18th century, it was abandoned around 1960 when the last nuns left. The complex consists of the katholikon and several auxiliary buildings with a total of 10 cells, which are uninhabited today. Inside the church, the carved wooden iconostasis of 1820 and the icon of the Virgin with an inscription dated 1821 stand out. Marble and clay fragments found on the site attest to an ancient settlement or temple in the area. The monastery celebrates on 25 March, and in recent years conservation and enhancement works have begun.
