Monastery of Saint Onouphrios

The Holy Monastery of Saint Onouphrios lies between the villages of Oxe and Mavrato and is one of Ikaria’s old monasteries. Today the ruins of the cells and a marble inscription dated 1809 on the gate survive, while inside there is an icon of Saint Onouphrios. The church’s distinctive roof stands out, combining square, circular, and octagonal forms. Around the monastery are remnants of gardens, vineyards, and a kiln used by the monks to fire ceramics, as well as an old olive press. Access is from the Agios Kirykos–Evdilos road and then a short walk.
