Psara

Church of Saint Nicholas

The Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos of Psara, patron of sailors, began to be built in 1785, at a time of bondage but also maritime prosperity on the island. Marbles were brought from Thymiana, other Aegean islands, Thessaly and Malta, proving the place’s seafaring might. The church is 28 meters long and its height reaches 24, lit by 51 windows and 7 doors. The sacred vessels, including donations from Ioannis Varvakis, were looted in the 1824 destruction; only the Holy Gospel survives. The church was completed in 1793, the birth year of Konstantinos Kanaris, and was destroyed in 1824, to be renovated in 1863 when the Psarians returned to the island. To reach it one must climb 60 steps, the same the Kanaris ascended before his glorious feat.
