Church of Saint George in Atsiki

Atsiki, built on Lemnos’s fertile plain, has roots predating the classical era, and its name likely relates to the Attic origin of its first settlers. In the 19th century it experienced economic growth reflected in the village’s architecture and intellectual life. Its hallmark is the Church of Saint George, built in 1868 as a three-aisled basilica with neoclassical elements, Corinthian capitals, and iconography in the Russian style. Its impressive bell tower, the work of stone-carver Ioannis Fotiadis from Samsun, rises over 17 meters and was built in 1928 with stone from Romanou and donations from Atsikiots of America. It originally housed a magnificent 400 kg Russian bell, later replaced due to damage. Today the church with its bell tower still dominates the village, combining historical gravitas with artistic mastery.
