Church of Saint Spyridon
The Church of St. Spyridon in Vathy, the cathedral of Samos, is an important religious and historical monument. Its construction began during the Hegemony of Konstantinos Karatheodori on the site of an earlier church and was completed thanks to the generous sponsorship of tobacco merchant Alexandros Paschalis, commemorated as the founder, who also donated the icon of St. Spyridon. The church is a basilica with a dome, with a wooden iconostasis painted by the Samian artist Ioannis Sitaras (1875–1959), while older icons date as far back as the 17th century. The entrance is adorned with two Ionic columns, framed by the impressive bell towers.
