Historic School of Volissos

After the liberation of Chios in 1912, affluent Chians and local leaders supported the island’s education through donations. However, the construction of the building in Volissos was funded by prominent Chians abroad, the London Committee, and the Volissos‑born industrialist and benefactor Ioannis Zartaloudis. The Ministry of Education, through the efforts of educator Michalis Papamavros, sent architects who drew up the building plans and provided 200,000 drachmas. Work began in 1924 and was fully completed in 1932. In 1928, primary school pupils in Volissos numbered over 200, while the secondary school had only 20–30 children. From the start of the 2008–2009 school year, the school took the name of the educator Michalis Papamavros, who was born and raised in Volissos in the late 19th century. Today the complex houses all levels of education (kindergarten, primary, junior high, and senior high).
