Psara
Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior
The Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour dominates the center of Psara’s Chora. It is a three-aisled basilica with a gallery and an octagonal dome, without a narthex, built on the foundations of an early Christian basilica. Its exact construction date is unknown. However, it is thought to predate 1770, as it is said Russian priests served there during the Orlov Revolt. The church was completely destroyed in 1824, in the Great Destruction of Psara. It was rebuilt in 1885 with the contribution of residents, who offered both donations and personal labor, as confirmed by an inscription over the church’s lintel. Today it is a key reference point for the island’s historical and religious memory.
