Church of Zoodochos Pigi in Kotsinas
The Church of the Life-giving Spring in Kotsinas stands out for its underground holy water, accessed via a tunnel with descending steps and a vaulted ceiling, hidden inside the hill. Its existence is mentioned from late Byzantine times, when the church stood within the walls of Kotsinas castle, one of Lemnos’s main ports under Venetian rule. Initially dedicated to the Virgin, it came to honor the Life-giving Spring, while its present form dates to the 1950s. The fresh-water spring inside was always considered precious, and the Venetians themselves likely maintained the subterranean passage. The church celebrates on the Friday after Easter with a large feast in its courtyard, where also stands the statue of Maroula, the legendary heroine who, according to tradition, roused her fellow villagers to repel the Turks in 1478.
