Church of Evangelistria in Moudros
Evangelistria is the parish church of Moudros and was erected in 1903. It is a three-aisled basilica with two bell towers and an impressive rose window on the façade. The church is the center of the Annunciation celebrations across Lemnos. A distinct relic is the Epitaphios, donated by Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis, who was on the island during World War I. The official consecration took place in 1919. The church is also linked to a dark story: on the same site stood a metochion (dependency) of Saint Marina of the Koutloumousiou Monastery of Mount Athos, which was destroyed when the Ottomans found the bodies of officers in a well and burned it along with the monks. Only two escaped to Mount Athos, alleging that the massacre was a provocation by locals seeking to seize its lands.
