Kalliopi
The creation of the settlement of Kalliopi is placed around 1200, when Kalliopi (Kalli), a wealthy resident of Hephaistia, settled in the area after the city’s decline. According to one view, she was forced to relocate due to expulsion for her conduct. In the cemetery there is a sarcophagus with the inscription “Here lies the servant of God Kalli.” Keros Bay, horn-shaped, served as the village’s harbor until late medieval times. The 1821 fighter Georgios Kapetanakis came from the village. The patron saint is St. George and, since 1869, there has been a church dedicated to him, where every year on his feast day the custom of horse races is revived, starting from Keros Beach. Near the village lies Chortarolimni, a wetland included in NATURA 2000, where an Environmental Information Center has operated since 2001. In the area there is also a Paleo-Christian tomb in the cemetery of Agia Anna.
