Kaspakas

Kaspakas took its name from the Byzantine admiral Kaspakas, who lived in the time of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081–1118). In 1918 it was recognized as an autonomous community, and since 1981 the settlements of Agios Ioannis and Gali have been recorded separately. Agios Ioannis is particularly known for its beautiful sandy beach and for the impressive rocks, the so-called “Meteora of Kaspakas,” which attract many visitors every year, contributing to the area’s tourist development. On the “Poliochni” knoll near Agios Ioannis, prehistoric remains have been identified, confirming the area’s long human presence. The archaeological importance of the site was already noted in 1934 by Father Angelis Michelis, who first highlighted the place’s value.
