Kardamyla

Kardamyla is the largest village of northeastern Chios. It occupies a privileged position, stretching from the mountainside to the sea and fronting a wide bay. The older settlement is Ano Kardamyla, which preserves the features of local vernacular architecture: stone‑built, cuboid two‑story buildings, narrow streets, and arched passages are among the settlement’s hallmarks. In Ano Kardamyla visitors can enjoy coffee or a meal in the stone‑paved square shaded by plane trees. Kato Kardamyla, or Marmaro, lies by the sea. Notable sights include the Church of Saint Nicholas with its marble iconostasis in Marmaro; the bronze sculpture by Thanasis Apartis dedicated to the Kardamyla seafarer; and the traditional windmills of Psarros and Mavris standing on the beach. Finally, among the area’s most popular beaches are Nagos and Giosonas.
