Chios

Kallimasia

Kallimasia, one of the largest and liveliest Mastichochoria of Chios, spreads across a fertile plain surrounded by olive groves. Like many villages on the island, it suffered severe damage in the 1881 earthquake, which left medieval ruins behind. Today, however, it is a vibrant hub of southern Chios, with cafés, shops, and well‑maintained churches such as the Dormition of the Theotokos and the Monastery of Panagia Plakidiotissa. Near the village are the organized and busy beach of Agia Fotia, with clear, deep‑blue waters and options for water sports, and the quieter beach of Agios Aimilianos. The area has tourist infrastructure with hotels, restaurants, and tavernas serving local meze. Also noteworthy is the Kallimasia Folklore Museum, while the village celebrates on 8 August (St. Aimilianos) and on 15 August for the Dormition.
