Cave exploration (caving or spelunking) on Samos is an exciting activity that combines adventure, nature and history with teamwork. The island has more than 12 caves, the best known being Pythagoras’ Cave on Kerkis, where, according to tradition, the great philosopher found refuge and taught. Equally impressive are the caves of Panagia Sarantaskaliotissa, with small chapels and old hermitages just a few meters from the entrance. Access requires a short hike on waymarked paths, with steps and some steeper sections. Exploration is always done with an organized group and an experienced guide, with basic safety equipment, so that the experience remains enjoyable yet safe.
