Thymaina is an area of particular interest for diving thanks to its rich underwater archaeological heritage. Surveys by the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities have identified a total of 58 shipwrecks and thousands of finds, dating from the Archaic Period to the pre-revolutionary years, while numerous wrecks from the 3rd to the 7th century AD attest to Thymaina’s importance as a hub of maritime trade in Antiquity. Leveraging this heritage, a diving park is being set up at the Lemonopetres site, with zoning, lighted markers and a fully remote-controlled monitoring and protection system. In addition, two visitable underwater archaeological sites are planned at Aspros Kavos and Vathylakas, giving divers the chance to explore the area’s historic wrecks and unique underwater finds safely and with respect for the environment.
