Castle of Moudros
Southeast of Lemnos, about 2 km east of Moudros at an elevation of 150 m around a low knoll, lies the Castle of Moudros, also called “Paleokastro.” Although few structural elements of the castle survive today, its position—close to medieval settlements and in direct visual contact with Moudros harbor—ranks it among Lemnos’ important monuments. It covers about 6 stremmas. It bears a curtain wall of rough sandstone blocks, while within the enclosure architectural remains from earlier constructions remain visible. From the period of the Venetian-Turkish war (1464–1479) to the early 17th century, the castle, according to sources, was in its prime. Today, however, its masonry is found throughout the surrounding area, as locals dismantled it to construct sheepfolds and other makeshift buildings.
