Castle of Kotsinas

Image

In the north of Lemnos, atop a low knoll about 20 m high and close to the sea, stands Kotsinas Castle. It covers about 4 stremmas. From its condition and available historical sources, it appears the castle was built atop an artificial hill and was surrounded by walls, with a defensive moat on three sides. Quadrangular defensive towers are discernible in places. Inside the fortress, part of an irregular building with an entrance was discovered, where a marble inscribed architectural member bearing the Palaiologos monogram came to light, while on either side it preserves an inscription with the name Demetrios. As for finds from the castle, there is a strong presence of scattered sherds of glazed Byzantine pottery and clay tripod stands. Lastly, at the center of the castle, the church of the Life-Giving Spring dominates, with its underground crypt and the imposing bronze statue of the local heroine, Maroula.
