Gymnasium-Lyceum Building of Myrina

The Myrina Gymnasium–Lyceum building is an emblematic landmark of the town and a touchstone in the history of education on Lemnos. It was built between 1925 and 1928 with funds from the Pan-Lemnian School Fund and emigrants from Egypt. For decades the school hosted generations of students, serving as a “hive” of learning for the entire island. Its austere, symmetrical façade and well-judged proportions recall modern-era urban architecture, while its position in the fabric of Myrina makes it easily recognizable. The façade decoration was executed from designs by engineer Michalis Michailidis. Over time, conservation and upgrade works have been needed to keep it safe and functional. Today, the building still symbolizes the continuity of public education on Lemnos, linking the school’s past with the contemporary needs of the student community.
