Sir John Antoniadis Mansion
Sir John Antoniadis ranks among the 19th-century benefactors who, despite the wealth they earned abroad, never forgot their birthplace. He placed great emphasis on education, supporting schools and young people, believing deeply in the power of knowledge. He was the wealthiest Lemnian in Egypt and made significant donations to build churches on Lemnos, such as the Metropolitan Church of the Holy Trinity in Myrina and the Dormition of the Virgin in Kornos. From 1861 he served on a committee of Egyptians abroad that supported the island’s schools, while in 1868 he built a luxurious two-storey mansion with eleven rooms on Romaikos Gialos, considered the most impressive building in the area. The mansion hosted him on his visits, as well as his mother and sister, whose husband served as the Greek consul on Lemnos.
