Mavra Volia

Mavra Volia beach, known to locals as Mavros Gialos, is in southeastern Chios, 30 kilometers from Chios town and 7 kilometers from the medieval village of Pyrgi. It is a unique beach, best known for its jet‑black pebbles—the result of an eruption of the nearby volcano Psaronas in antiquity. Its waters are crystal clear, deep, and usually icy, and take on a dark hue from the color of the pebbles. The beach is divided into two parts, the second of which is also known as Foki. In the small harbor of the seaside settlement there are several tavernas, and the area has rooms to let and shops. It is also worth visiting for the ancient settlement of Emporio, where important archaeological finds have come to light.
