Nikolaos Sialmas Monument

A significant landmark of Agios Efstratios is the monument to Nikolaos Sialmas, located on the cape of the same name (formerly Trypiti) at the island’s southern tip. It was created to honor the Air Force flight lieutenant who lost his life after his aircraft crashed into the sea south of Agios Efstratios while defending national airspace, flying an F‑1CG of 342 All-Weather Squadron of the 114 Combat Wing (Tanagra), on 18 June 1992. The inscription “MOLON LAVE” is moving and stands as a heroic ideal.
