Monument to the Unknown Sailor

In Oinousses’ Seamanship Square stands the monument of the Unknown Sailor, the first statue in Greece dedicated to sailors lost at sea. Around the monument are inscribed the names of all Oinoussian sailors who perished at sea. The sailor gazes sternly at the seas and stands proudly at the helm. At the base are the verses “Nothing, my Lords, is of any use, only the ship” by Alexandros Pallis, referring to Kanaris. The Oinoussians chose these lines so the island’s children would read them, see the sailor, and know that out there at sea lie their prosperity and glory.
