Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity
The Metropolis of Lemnos, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, dominates Myrina in the Trifoto area near the stone bridge. The present church was built in 1864 to plans by the renowned Tinian church-builder Zacharias Filippotis, with financial support from Lemnians of the diaspora. It is a three-aisled basilica with a dome, notable for its twin bell towers—added in 1910 thanks to a donation by Pavlos Psarof. A distinctive artistic feature is the carved and gilded wooden templon, brought from the demolished church of Saint Nicholas in Myrina. Among the wall paintings is a striking depiction of Saint Nicholas holding the helm of a sailing ship with a Turkish flag, likely a votive offering. A church already existed on this site from 1479; it was destroyed after the Orlov Revolt, when the Ottomans burned the site and killed Metropolitan Joachim. Today’s church, with its surrounding garden and his bust, blends religious grandeur with historical memory.
