Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is located in Sigri, western Lesvos, at the center of the protected area of the Petrified Forest. Established in 1994, it aims to study, protect, conserve and promote the Lesvos Petrified Forest, a “Protected Monument of Nature” of global recognition due to its exceptional environmental, geological and paleontological value. The permanent sections include the history of plant evolution on Earth, the finds of the Petrified Forest and major Greek plant fossil sites, and the geodynamic processes associated with volcanism and the geohistorical evolution of the Aegean. The exhibition features fossilized trunks, branches, fruits and leaves from various conifers and angiosperms, and fossilized animal bones from the Lower Miocene, 20 million years ago. The museum also operates a seismic table, offering visitors a realistic experience of major earthquakes.
