Museum of Nautical Tradition and Sponge Diving of Nea Koutali
The Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Diving of Nea Koutali is located in the central square of the village, just 23 km from Myrina. It was founded on the initiative of the Nea Koutali Community Council. The museum is housed in an old community building that formerly served as a community clinic and belongs to the Municipality of Lemnos. The building was renovated, expanded, and remodeled to host its archaeological and modern collections. The museum’s aims are to highlight the history of the Koutalianoi in their old homeland and to present sponge diving as it was experienced and practiced by the Koutalianoi in their new homeland, Lemnos. The exhibition is organized into three thematic units: “The Life of the Koutalianoi before their uprooting,” “Sponge Diving in Nea Koutali on Lemnos,” and “The Archaeological Collection.” The exhibits are mainly donations and demonstrate the cultural sensitivity of the Koutalianoi.
