The Theophilos Museum stands in Vareia, Mytilene, where the self-taught folk painter Theophilos Hatzimichail (1867–1934) was born and spent his childhood, funded by the famous Mytilenian art publisher, Stratis Eleftheriadis (TERIADE). The museum was erected in 1964 and in 1965 Eleftheriadis donated it to the Municipality of Mytilene. It consists of four contiguous rooms housing 86 paintings by Theophilos on themes drawn from History, Mythology and Folklore. The exhibition was curated by Yiannis Tsarouchis.
