Museum of Tannery of Samos

Image

The Samos Tannery Museum, unique of its kind in Greece, is housed in an old stone tannery (tabakiko) in Karlovasi. Samos stood out for leatherworking, an activity that particularly flourished in the town, with Samian leather exported to many parts of the world. The tanneries thrived until about 1930, but after 1950, unable to compete with large industries, they began to fade and eventually disappeared by the end of the 20th century. Today, only the shells of the buildings and the Tannery Museum remain to recall the craft and life of another era. Exhibits include tools and machinery, processed leather, photographs, and historical information on leather‑processing methods, reflecting the rich history of tanning in Karlovasi.
