Myrina

Myrina, the capital of Lemnos, has a long history that begins before the Bronze Age, as archaeological finds attest. Its name is linked to Myrina, daughter of King Kretheus and wife of the mythical King Thoas. Its foundation is placed around the 12th–13th century BC, when the Minyans dominated the island, a period when the first castle was likely built. For centuries the city was a strong fortress and was known as “Kastro” until 1955. Today, it retains its traditional character with quaint alleys, mansions along Romaikos Gialos, a lively market, and a charming little harbor. Highlights include the Venetian Castle with its deer, the Archaeological and Ecclesiastical Museums, the prehistoric town, and the Metropolitan Church of the Holy Trinity. Nearby are the beaches of Richa Nera, Romaikos Gialos, and Avlonas, where the Porto Mirina hotel stands out together with the ancient temple of Artemis.
