Mytilene
Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos, lies at the island’s southeastern end and is amphitheatrically built on seven hills. The Byzantine castle, dominating the city’s eastern side, is its signature monument, built over earlier ruins. Its history is reflected in significant monuments such as the ancient theatre, the Roman aqueduct at Moria, the church of Saint Therapon, the Metropolis and the Yeni Mosque. Around the port stand out the Prefectural Building, City Hall and the Courthouse, while the old town enchants with its traditional architecture and cobbled lanes. It is also a cultural center with museums, art venues and numerous events. Ermou Street is the commercial core, while along the waterfront elegant mansions and bustling shops form a lively, authentic picture of the city.
