Vigla is the name today of the acropolis of ancient Eresos, occupying a rocky hill SE of today’s Skala Eresou. On the ruins of the old acropolis the Byzantine castle was built, attested since the early 14th c. The hilltop site includes sections of the ancient city walls, a Roman building with hypocausts, and remains of houses. From the Byzantine castle of Eresos, only scant ruins survive today—a circular and a rectangular tower and a water cistern. The castle underwent alterations and additions, first by the Byzantines themselves and later by the island’s Gattilusi rulers (from 1355 onward).
