Fortified Site on Agios Alexios Hill

In the northwest of Agios Efstratios, near Alonitsi beach, lies the height of Agios Alexios, dominated by the remnants of an ancient fort. The structure of this likely ancient fortress consists of large stones and boulders. The fort had an irregular rectangular shape and controlled the island’s northeastern coasts. Its south side was reinforced with double walls, while the east, due to the steep slope, was naturally defended, without visible masonry. The defense was strengthened by three towers, one at the center of the east side and two at the ends of the south wall. Access to the interior was via two gates, one to the southwest and one to the northwest. A few tombs have been identified within the fort, whose dating remains unclear.
