Mount Atheras
Mount Atheras, also known as Pramnos, is the “backbone” of Ikaria, running along the island with its highest peak, Fardi, at 1.042 meters. Its landscape combines steep slopes, forested areas, and striking schist and marble formations, while frequent fog creates an almost mystical atmosphere even in summer. Atheras is an important natural habitat within the Natura 2000 network and hosts rare species of plants, amphibians, and reptiles, such as the characteristic Ikarian lizard (Lacerta oertzeni oertzeni). It is also a refuge for raptors and migratory birds, such as the Bonelli’s eagle, the long-legged buzzard, and the peregrine falcon. The mountain route of Atheras offers a unique experience to nature lovers and hikers, revealing the authentic, wild beauty and biodiversity that characterize Ikaria.
