Xylosyrtis

Xylosyrtis is a picturesque seaside village, built amphitheatrically a few kilometers southwest of the capital, Agios Kirykos. The settlement is directly linked to ancient Greek mythology, for here, tradition says, Icarus fell into the sea, giving his name to the Icarian Sea. The area is famed for its clean beach and the “Athánato Neró” (“Immortal Water”) hot spring that bubbles up by the sea, known for its healing properties. A landmark of the landscape is the rock “the Old Woman of Kakoperato,” which legend says is a petrified mother who awaited her son’s return from abroad. Within a short distance visitors can see the Monument to Icarus and the historic Monastery of the Annunciation.
