Mytilene Archaeological Museum Old Building

Image

The Old Building of the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene lies near the city’s port and houses finds from the Final Neolithic to the Late Roman period. It was built in 1912 by the Vournazos family as a residence. It comprises two floors and a ground floor. The first floor displays exhibits of the Final Neolithic (St. Bartholomew’s cave) and the Bronze Age (Thermi). The second floor presents, in chronological order, objects from the 10th c. BC to the 4th c. AD. The outbuilding showcases the unique Aeolic capitals as well as inscriptions. In the courtyard are the heavy sculptures and architectural members of important Hellenistic and Roman buildings of Mytilene. The finds from excavations of the Bronze Age settlement at Thermi hold a prominent place in the permanent exhibition, including clay vessels, stone, metal and bone tools, weapons, loom weights and spindle whorls, and figurines.
